Day 2 was long. I woke up with a tremendous amount of pain and rated it an 8 out of 10. The nurses had blocked my epidural the night before since it worked so well and made my feet numb. They were giving me medication through a drip line, but it just wasn't working. As I cried due to the pain being so high, my nurse decided she wanted to check my epidural in my back and asked me to roll over... Let's just say I screamed and a few choice words flew out of my mouth while they turned me on my side.
After 3 hours in pain, my surgeon came in and was shocked that they hadn't put the epidural back in. My feeling in my feet had come back, so he knew there was no nerve damage due to the epidural. He put a fire under the nurses ass and within 15 minutes after seeing him, my epidural was back in and I was feeling so much better! I am so thankful for Dr. Olson.
My afternoon was better, and it was all about pain control and a little bit of physical therapy. A physical therapist and occupational therapist arrived around noon and got me sitting up on the edge of the bed. It was not easy, but I am so proud that I was able to get up and dangle my feet over the edge. It felt so good to get off of my back for a few minutes! They even let me brush my teeth and wash my face. They gave me a traction bar over my bed to hold onto and pull myself around a little. It's not easy to use, but it helps me get off my back for a few seconds before I have to lower myself back down again.
My appetite has been low, but I did manage to get a few bites in. The hospital food here is awful. I stuck with the chocolate cake for dinner (ate half of a small piece), and skipped over the chicken pot pie that was not seasoned at all. You know it's bad when you have to ask what is on your plate!
Day 3 should be interesting. PT and OT are coming back and might try to get me walking with a walker. That would be nice. I could use to get out of bed for a few minutes! My bum is getting sore!
